Hello
My Name Is Ivory and I Would Like To Tell You My Story

I
am originally from Minnesota I think. I’m not exactly sure.
You see in January 2002 I was found on the Minnesota-Canada
border and taken to a shelter.
I was really hungry and skinny and scared; I was only about 6
months old. I don’t
know if I ran away or someone dumped me – my memory is kind of
fuzzy, but I didn’t care much for people.
I
got lucky though. Someone that knew about Eskimo dogs came through
the shelter and saw me. They
contacted the American Eskimo Rescue in Iowa.
Perry at the rescue center said he would take me but now they
had to figure out how to get me to Des Moines.
Eight different people let me stay with them as they moved me
south to Perry’s. By
the time I got to Perry’s I was really scared and not really sure
what was going on.
There
were a lot of Eskimo dogs at Perry’s and they all told me that
Perry and his wife Stacie were nice humans. They took real good care of me.
Fattened me up, got all my shots and had me spay.
Perry was working on teaching me manners when he got a call
from some people in Sioux Falls that thought they wanted to adopt an
Eskimo dog. Their dog
had died in January (about the same time I was found - coincidence?)
and they had meet another Eskimo dog named Della and they really
liked her, so they called to see if Perry had any dogs that needed a
good home.
Perry
told them about me and they ask if they could come and meet me.
So over Easter Sandy & Jeff came to meet me.
Perry explained to them that I was not sure of humans yet,
and my manners needed some work, but they fell in love with me
anyway.
When
they got back to Sioux Falls they called Perry and told him they
wanted to adopt me. Perry
said he had to teach me some basic manners so it would be a few
weeks before I could leave.
Sandy
& Jeff were so excited that I was coming to live with them.
They started buying me some neat things before they even
picked me up. On Friday
April 19, 2002 Jeff and Sandy drove to Des Moines all night long all
they could do was talk about me.
At 10am on Saturday they arrived at Perry’s. I was really excited to see them again and Stacie had given
me a bath so I would look real pretty for them.
They visited with Stacie and Perry while I sat on Jeff’s
lap and got my tummy rubbed. After all the paperwork was done I said
goodbye to Perry & Stacie and all my friends and headed to Sioux
Falls with Sandy & Jeff.
They
bought me a seat belt harness so I could ride safely in the car and
they had lots of treats for the ride home, we even stopped at a
place called DQ and had something called ice cream – I loved it!
They couldn’t believe how well I did in the car.
(I guess they forgot I went all the way from Canada to
DesMoines when I was rescued so I had lots of miles under my belt.)
Sandy
and Jeff had a great home for me.
On Monday April 22 it was Sandy’s Birthday and no one knew
my bithdate for sure and when we went to see Dr. Brost he thought I
was close to one year old so we made my birthday and Sandy’s the
same. Dr. Brost and his
pretty girl helpers looked me all over and thought I looked in great
shape. It was a little
scary and I growled a little but everyone was nice to me and they
told me I was one lucky dog. I
wasn’t really sure what they were talking about, but I think it
has something to do with my mom and dad!
I
was already housetrained and Sandy thought that was a big plus, but
I soon showed them I had other problems!!! On Sunday my new human brother John came over to meet me and
I guess you could say my behavior was pretty awful. I growled and showed my teeth and barked real mean and really
upset mom, she couldn’t believe I was so TERRIBLE. That night mom was crying because she thought maybe I was too
mean and would not be able to stay here and they were already in
love with me.
The
next morning mom called Joe Rodriguez, a dog trainer in Sioux Falls
that everyone thought was wonderful. Joe told mom to bring me in right away.
So
off we went to see Joe. I
didn’t like Joe either and I growled a lot at him and even tried
to snap at him but he told me I didn’t scare him.
He put a collar on me that kind of tickled when I growled and
mom said, “leave it”. Mom
took me home with the collar and some instructions from Joe.
The next day John came back to visit and every time I growled
or barked at him my collar would tickle and mom was telling me to
‘leave it”. I
finally figured out what was going on and soon I didn’t need the
collar anymore – and on top of that I decided I really liked John
and all the other humans I tried to scare away.
Mom
and I went to obedience classes that Joe had and I really learned a
lot over the weeks. Every
week in class we learned new things then all week mom and I would
practice. Well on the
night of graduation and you won’t believe it – I got 2nd
place and a red ribbon. Joe
couldn’t believe I was the same dog.
I heard him tell my mom and dad that if they hadn’t worked
so hard with me I would have been put to sleep (I’m not sure what
that means but I’m sure glad it didn’t happen).
Mom
and Dad are Sooooo PROUD of me.
I love my human brothers and all our human friends and
especially human children. I
never growl anymore but I still have to learn not to bark at the UPS
man or the mailman (I forget sometimes) but mom will help me
remember. I also hear
everyone say I am just a year old and will get better.
I WILL get better, in fact I plan to be the Perfect because
my mom and dad love me so much – I want to do it for them.
Mom
and I went to visit Joe today and mom told Joe she would like to
train me to be a therapy dog. I’m
not sure what that is but Joe thinks I would be great so it much be
something fun.
Mom
and Joe will keep working with me and in no time mom says we will be
visiting kids in the hospital!
I think I will like that cause I have never been afraid of
kids and I am learning that most humans are good too.
I’m not sure way I hated humans so much before, mom says
someone was mean to me. But
I never have to worry about that again because my mom and dad will
never let anyone hurt me and I will always be loved and well taken
care of.
I’m
pretty sure I know what the people at Dr. Brost's office were
talking about. I am one
lucky Dog!
Love
& Kisses,
Ivory
