MISSY
(a very special rescue story)

My name is Missy and I would like to tell you about my rescue by Pet Pals For Life and of my new life with Perry and Stacie at American Eskimo Rescue in Des Moines, IA..

The owner I had since I was a puppy moved away and left me with a member of her family.  I guess she decided I was too much trouble because of my age.  The person she left me with  heard about Pet Pals For Life and stopped at Heart of the Vine where he talked with Sharon and Susan.  He told them I was 10 years old and a little hard of hearing.  He also said that he was moving away and if he could not find  a new home for me, I would be "put down".  That certainly didn't sound very good to me!

Sharon and Susan told him not to do that.  They would find me a foster home and then a permanent home.  He agreed and Sharon and Susan started calling supporters to see if they could find me a temporary home.

Sharon called Deanna and Dan Brouwer and they offered to "take me in".  So on a Friday morning I was brought to Sharon's coffee shop where she walked me by the tables where customers  were drinking coffee.  I was very good and gave them special kisses as I walked by.  Susan came down to meet me and Sandy stopped by to take pictures of me so they could make a "special alert" poster to place around town in their pet books.  Sharon's employees took turns walking me around the block until the Brouwers arrived to take me to their home.  Sharon also discovered that I had several ticks in my fur so she took me over to Dr. Sommers to have them removed and put frontline on.

When Sharon talked with Deanna the next morning, Deanna told her that she thought I could not hear at all and had experienced a slight seizure.  Sharon called the vet who had my records and was informed that I had experienced seizures before and was in a stage of kidney failure.

Sharon, Sandy, Susan and Deanna discussed my condition and decided it would be best to see if Perry and Stacie could take me to live in their Eskie rescue center in Des Moines, IA.  Sandy had adopted her new dog, Ivory, from the rescue center and had become friends with Perry.  Perry and Stacie said "yes" without any hesitation.  They are such good people.

So on Sunday Deanna drove me to Sioux City, IA where she met Donna from Omaha who finished driving me to Des Moines.  Can you imagine all the attention given to a little white dog who appeared to have so many medical problems?

When I arrived at Des Moines, Perry took me to the veterinarian who discovered the real story of my condition.  Can you believe I am really 14 years old, almost blind, completely deaf and in the final stages of kidney failure?  I guess my first owners did not know me very well or they just didn't want to tell anyone.  It didn't make any difference, though, to Pet Pals or American Eskimo Rescue - they were going to take care of me for the rest of my life.

Pet Pals made special posters about my condition and put them on collection boxes in the coffee shop and a local pet store.  The money raised was sent to Perry and Stacie to help take care of my medications and special food.

So now I live with Perry, Stacie and the other Eskies they so lovingly and gently provide and care for.  Under Perry's care, I have gained weight and am even more smashingly beautiful!!  At night I  get ice cream - the kind with lots of fat because it's good for me.  And I give Perry little 'love hugs' by wrapping my legs around his ankles.

Perry took me on a wonderful shopping adventure to the bank and Petco where I met lots of children who petted by beautiful fur.  I got to help select the right dog food and even though I can't see very well or hear, I could still smell all those good treats!  If you would like to follow me on my shopping adventure, click on the link below so you can tour Perry and Stacie's wonderful rescue center.

Can you imagine all this fuss over me?  I am so fortunate that Sharon, Sandy, Susan and the Brouwers took me in - and so happy that Perry and Stacie have given me such a wonderful new life.

Update August 14, 2002.  Missy has gained 4 lbs. and blood tests indicate her kidney failure is in remission.  Shows you what love, kindness, good care and great ice cream can do!
