WHAT
IS
PET PALS FOR LIFE?

SAMANTHA
Pet Pals For Life was
organized in March of 2002 by Sharon Rae, Sandy Christians and Susan
Antonitis. It evolved out of a friendship and common love for
pets after Sandy lost her beloved 16 year old Shih tzu,
Samantha. Six years earlier Sharon had lost her best friend,
Nitska, a shepherd/lab who had just turned 15. She had since
adopted Miss Sonja Rae from the Sioux Falls Humane Society.
Sandy needed to fill a void in her life after losing Samantha and
Sharon had an interest in the humane society because of Sonja.
So they began discussing ways to assist shelters with adoptions.
Sharon had known Susan
as a customer in her shop and recalled her interest in pet
rescues. So the contact was made, the friendship began, and
Pet Pals For Life became a reality.
The original intent
was to create an awareness in
the community about the many wonderful, adoptable pets at our local
humane society who need to find homes. Euthanasia becomes an
issue
because there is simply not enough space to house the numbers
surrendered or strayed to the facility. This is a problem
nationwide because of society's lack of responsibility in making a
commitment to pets, inhumane breeding operations and a poor record
of spaying and neutering to eliminate unwanted litters of
pets.
Our organizational
meeting in March was an invitation to various individuals in the
community to assist in our efforts. The main focus at that
time was an Adopt A Pet center at Heart of the Vine Coffee & Tea
and pet books placed in various locations throughout the community
with pictures of pets available for adoption and information about
the humane society.
Our focus since then has
become
more widespread to network with other shelters, rescue groups, private
citizens and agencies needing assistance with pet awareness
and pet needs. We have been in contact efforts with rescue
groups in several states as well as ongoing communications with the
respected agency, ASCAP.
Since organizing, Pet
Pals For Life has become overwhelmed with pet placements and
requests. In June the decision was made to file for a nonprofit 501c3
chapter in order to apply for grants and fund raising efforts to
assist with placements, fostering, spaying & neutering and all
other pet related needs. Visit our "Success
Stories" section for a review of these pet placements.
As our organization
continues to expand, our focus will remain the same - to house,
shelter and assist abandoned and strayed animals. By
networking with the general public, media, clinics, shelters and
rescue groups, Pet Pals For Life will continue to make a difference
for the beautiful animals it is our privilege to care for and know.
It is our philosophy
that "To love, comfort
and care for a pet is the most rewarding satisfaction we can experience." Pet Pals For Life
organizers and supporters ask you to join
them in this effort.
